Every year many fires in the home are started because of candles. But candles are so cozy in a home. How can you enjoy them and be safe?
The biggest thing to remember is to never leave a candle unattended. If you have a candle lit, make sure to stay in the room. Do not ever fall asleep with a candle burning. Place your candles on a solid surface that cannot be easily knocked over by kids or pets. Do not place them near a breeze, whether it’s an open window on a windy day or near a fan. You do not want anything to spread the flame.
It has been recommended to trim the wick of your candle to ¼” so the flame does not get too big and out of control. Limit the burning time. If you use a match to light your candle, dispose of that properly. Run the match under water or let it cool down on a heat-resistant surface. If you throw a hot match into the trash can, you may unintentionally ignite some materials and start a fire.
