Have you ever had a clogged sink drain? We all have. There are some basic rules to follow to avoid serious plumbing issues.
To start, invest in a good sink strainer basket. There is a variety to choose from, but the main thing is to find one that is easy to clean and catches food well before it slips down your drain. Silicone ones are okay but may become stained after a while. Stainless steel may be a more durable, longer-lasting option.
Scrape off chunks of food into your garbage before doing dishes. Also, remember to wipe off grease from your pots and dishes. The oils from bacon fat, coconut oil, and other thick greasy agents may clog up your drain. It’s best to wipe them up with paper towel before washing them down your sink.
If you get a clog, you could try pouring very hot water down your drain. This may dissolve whatever is stuck. If that doesn’t work, you can try plunging your sink or opening the drain trap. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners. They are dangerous for the environment and your health. Try a mix of baking soda and vinegar instead or some other biodegradable cleaner.
